- Are you out of your mind?!
- No books for you!
- Would you like to trade your book for my loaf of bread?
- Sure!
- "Boom!" was the noise Mr. Auld made as he slammed his fist on the table. "Are you out of your mind? He should not be able to read, write or think for himself because he is a slave and is worth little more than an animal!" He was furious.
- Because of this event, Mrs. Auld stopped teaching me how to read and our relationship changed. I had lost courage in finding happiness in this cruel, cruel world.
- When I was sent to the market, I saw a very poor white boy with a book. An idea began to climb its way to the top of my mind. "Hello!" I exclaimed to him. The boy did not respond. "Would you like to trade your book for my loaf of bread?" The boy's eyes widened when he heard this. "Sure! But be sure to return it to me by tomorrow morning."
- In conclusion, I had found a way to continue to read by trying hard enough to make it happen. I knew that reading would open up possibilities I had never imagined.
