Storyboard Text

  • Prince Siddhartha was born in a garden while flowers rained down on him and his mother. He already looked like he was a few years old, and he could already walk and talk! While his birth was exciting, his parents were worried about his future. Before he was born, Siddhartha's mother had a dream that her son could either be the ruler of the universe, or he could become a Buddhist.

  • King Suddhodana wanted Siddhartha to become a great ruler, so he made sure that Siddhartha never saw suffering in the world. He gave him the best life he could ask for. Great food, great education, wealth, he had everything he needed and more.

  • Siddhartha is Married 
  • When Siddhartha was 16, he married. For 12 years he lived with his wife, then had a baby when he was 29. Because he was now a father, Siddhartha had more freedom, and he was allowed to leave the royal palace.
  • One Siddhartha's first trip leaving the palace he sees an old man. On his second trip he sees a man who is sick. On his third trip he sees a dead person. These forms of suffering deeply confused and disturbed him. On his fourth trip he met an ascetic who told him to give up his desires in order to end suffering.

  • Prince Siddhartha Becomes an Ascetic
  • After his experience with the ascetic, Siddhartha felt that his magnificent life as a prince was empty. He decided to give up his royal life in order to be free of suffering. He cut off his hair, put on simple robes, and began his journey as an ascetic. He met other ascetics during his journey, and meditated with them, fasted with them, and traveled with them. Siddhartha eventually became unhappy by his current state. He was extremely skinny and was unhappy that he could not end his suffering.

  • Prince Siddhartha was upset because he still didn't figure out how to be free of suffering. He sat under a tree and meditated. A long time later, he found it. The key to be free of suffering.
