August has a facial disorder. He's been home schooled all his life, and now he's finally going to school.
Mom and Dad are sending me to public school!!
My name is August Pullman, and I'm just another ordinary kid. But I'm not. I have a facial disorder, and no one treats me like I'm normal. They treat me like I can't do anything. But I can do everything, I can eat ice cream, ride bikes, read, and write, but I don't go to school, and that's because everyone looks my way. I'm no different than anybody else.
I overheard my parents talking about sending me to public school. I've been home schooled all my life, and now I'm scared.
Hi August, I'm Mr. Tushman. Yes, I know it's a funny name, and you can laugh at it. But I want you to meet Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte.
I ran to my room to cry, but my older sister Via found me, and she tried to comfort me. It didn't work that much because I knew people would look my way no matter what. And I was scared of that.
Hi August!! I'm Jack. It's very nice to meet you!!
Hi. I'm Julian.
The next day, my mom takes me to school to meet Mr Tushman. But I didn't know that I would meet more than just the principle.
I looked at Mom. She looked at me. When we do that it's kind of like telepathy. She basically said, "Sorry I didn't tell you." I said, "That isn't fair, Mom!! I don't want to meet more people!!"
I looked at them, and I saw that Jack was a very nice person, Julian was going to be like every other person I'd met, and Charlotte was very shy. Then I looked down at their shoes, and I saw the same thing. You can really get to know a person by their shoes. Jack: cool and nice, Julian: rich and snooty, and Charlotte:... oh no, we got a crazy girl.
