When the beggar was young and very rich and greedy with many camels, he was once traveling in a desert headed to India. While there, he met a dervish who spoke to him of a hidden treasure near by in a cave. The dervish reread to show him the treasure if the beggar would give him half of him camels and half of his treasure collected. The beggar agreed. They collected many gems and gold, the dervish collected a gold vase that he said was filled with ointment. When they went back from the treasure cave, the beggar somehow convinced the dervish to give him all his camels back. But he was not satisfied and asked the dervish for the vase. the dervish opened the vase and reached in it, pulling out the inside substance and cursing the beggar's eyes. He was now blind.
The blind beggar finished his tale and the caliph decided he had suffered long enough and lifted the curse.
