  • Russia had a very poor economy and living conditions. There was insufficient food supplies, no appropriate armaments, or adequate roads to supply the army. 
  • The Russian military was poorly led and equipped. There were enormous war losses.
  • The people of Russia wanted Czar Nicolas II removed from the throne, because he was a poor leader. The Czar and his family were imprisoned and this was the end of the Russian monarchy.
  • Russia attempted to start a kind of government called Socialism. The Soviet party believed that political equality must be coupled with economic equality.
  • A group of socialists, called the Bolsheviks, fought for control of the Soviets. They wanted all governing power. 
  • Vladmir Lenin was the leader of the Bolsheviks. He formed the basis of communism, and trained Russian workers to become a revolutionary force.
