Storyboard Text

  • The Safavid empire began in the Azerbaijan region of Iran, and ruled from 1502 to 1736.
  • We were most known for our architecture and our rugs, some of which were used for prayer.
  • Our homeland was founded by Shah, our king. He used the Shiite faith to unite our people.
  • One part of our religion is that women have to wear burkhas as a sign of modesty.
  • We were also forced into seclusion; we have very little power in this country or in this religion.
  • At the height of our power, we controlled all of Iran, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and part of Turkey and Syria as well as parts of up to 5 other present day countries.
  • However, one of our bitter rivals were the Ottomans.
  • The real reason for our decline was the incompetent leadership and not because of each other.
  • There is one modern country though that still follows our beliefs and religion. It is Saudi Arabia.
