Mrs. Mallard was a woman afflicted with heart trouble. She received news that her husband, Brently Mallard had been in a railroad disaster. His name was on the leading list of “killed”. She felt a wave of grief & went away in her room.
“Louise open the door! ... you will make yourself ill”
“Go away. I am not making myself ill”
She then stood facing a open window. There was something coming to her, but what was it? She didn’t know, but she felt it creeping out the sky reaching towards her through the sounds, scents & the color that filled the air
She then began to recognize this thing that was approaching her. There would be no one live for for, she would live for herself!!
She wasn’t becoming ill, she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window
They later walked down the stairs after Josephine, her sister came into the room looking at Louise’s feverish triumph in her eyes...
When they got to they bottom, they saw somebody open the front door. It was Mr.Mallard. He stood amazed... when the doctors came they said she had died from a heart disease- - of the joy that kills
