During carnival in Italy, Montresor asks Fortunato if he wanted to drink some wine with him down in the catacombs. "he had a weak point this Fortunato, although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on this connoisseurship in wine."
Montresor(narrator)was not actually going down to the drink wine with fortunato, but to seek revenge. Montresor said "the thousand injuries of fortunato i had borne as i best could; but when he ventured upon insult, i vowed revenge.
Montresor guids Fortunato into the catacombs, but Fortunato is caughing and sounds sick. Montresor tells Fortunato, "we will go back; your health is precious. you are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once i was." Fortunato insist they keep moving as he drinks his wine, while drunk.
Fortunato and Montresor make it to the depths of the catacombs, there is no Amontillado. there is a hole in the wall for fortunato. Montresor "throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist."
As Fortunato realizes whats happening, he screams for help and for Montresor to not bury him alive. Montresor busied himself among a pile of bones, throwing the bones aside he then says "I soon uncovered a quantity of building stone and mortar." with the materials he began walling up the niche.
Montresors words "There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells. My heart grew sick, on account of the dampness of the catacombs. I hastened to make an end of my labor." Montresor was questioning his dissension. no one ever found out.
