Storyboard Text

  • The colony of Quebec was colonized by the French in 1608 in what is now known as Canada.
  • Before the French colonized, Native Americans/indigenous people were already living on the land.
  • Much like the British, the French discovered the Americas by "accident" when mariners sailed in search of fish and a northwest passage to Asia. They settled for the fish and while fishing was profitable, fur trade soon became far more lucrative.
  • Indigenous peoples exchanged animal pelts with Europeans for manufactured goods like guns, alcohol, wool blankets, and iron pots.
  • The French colonies had many of the same conflicts as the British with the indigenous peoples. They frequently clashed with native peoples who intruded on their hunting grounds and epidemic disease brought by the Europeans began to wipe out the indigenous population.
  • There is no way I'll ever do slave work for those men.
  • Maybe we can force them to work for us?
  • The French directly controlled their colonies because of the few people living in them. The French colonies were more set up as trading posts than permanent settlements.
