- - He loses his mother when he was 11. It has an impact on him. - He starts a quest of identity. - He goes to live with his uncle Victor.
- New York
- - He moves in NY in a flat. - His uncle lets him a box with many books that he uses as fourniture. - He loses his uncle and becomes depressed- He leaves his appartement because he can't pay the rent.
- Central Park
- - He becomes homeless and wanders in Central Park- Central park is for him a refuge, he feels at ease with people in the park, they provide him with food, he is at peace- he falls ill and finds a shelter in a cave, he'll reborn when going out of the cave - Kitty and Zimmer help him, they show him that he is not alone
- New York
- -Marco lives with Zimmer, he lives on zimmer's money but Marco doesn’t think he deserves all this and he wants to find a job.- he passes tests for military service but is found unfit. - he gets in a relationship with Kitty- he finds work to take care of an old man : Thomas Effing.
- New York
- - he lives with Effing, he reads a lot for him and walks around, Effing teaches him to really look at the world and Effing wants Marco to write his obituary. - he discovers that Effing’s real name is Julian Barber and that he was a painter- Effing tells his expedition in the west of the US and he explains that he found refuge in a cave and that he lived there for a while then he changed his name. - The two men get closer and Marco stays with Effing until his death.
- China Town
- - Marco moves with his girlfriend in China Town.- Marco in China Town is experiencing diversity, he feels like an outsider in his own country.- Marco learns that the obituary has been refused so he gets in touch with Salomon Barber, Effing's son. Marco learns that Salomon is his father. Salomon tells him about his life and he offers to leave both in search of the cave of Effing. - Kitty is pregnant and aborting causing their breakup
