Storyboard Text

  • Alvin Ramsey was born in Etowah county and lived there during the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century.
  • When he was about 17, Alvin ran away and found work at Gulf States Steel. He worked there until he was drafted into WWI.
  • The armistice was reached before Alvin saw combat. He was discharged and traveled around before settling in Miami as a gambler and a prize fighter.
  • After a large hurricane, Alvin moved to Birmingham and opened a barber shop. While he was here, he went through two wives before finally starting a family with a third.
  • After WWII started, his buisness declined as young men were leaving for war. So he moved to Camp Sibert and cut hair for the soldier's there.
  • After the war ended, Alvin moved around before finding a permanent job at Auburn where barbers were thriving from the popular haircut: the flattop.
