Alvin Ramsey was born in Etowah county and lived there during the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century.
When he was about 17, Alvin ran away and found work at Gulf States Steel. He worked there until he was drafted into WWI.
The armistice was reached before Alvin saw combat. He was discharged and traveled around before settling in Miami as a gambler and a prize fighter.
After a large hurricane, Alvin moved to Birmingham and opened a barber shop. While he was here, he went through two wives before finally starting a family with a third.
After WWII started, his buisness declined as young men were leaving for war. So he moved to Camp Sibert and cut hair for the soldier's there.
After the war ended, Alvin moved around before finding a permanent job at Auburn where barbers were thriving from the popular haircut: the flattop.
