Gretel is a 12-year-old girl who thinks she is 30. Gretel is important to the story because she finds an interest in Lutenient Kotler. She also sometiomes helps Bruno but is mostly mean to him. In theis scene in the cell, Gretel is feeling sad because she is trying to figure put who all the peopel behind the fence are.

Bruno is a nine-year-old boy and he is the main character to The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Bruno usually is wondering where his friend Schmuel is and why he cant go under the fence and play with his. There were many parts of the story that Bruno was significant too but one of the most important parts of the book is when he finally decides to go under the fence.
Schmuel is really small and he is also super skinny.
Father is a Nazi Commandant who is very strict and not that easy to talk to. He takes the situation when Hitler comes over very seriously and he makes sure everyone who is there is aware of how they should act. One important part of the book with father in it is when he realizes that he was the one who killed his son with all the other Jews.
Grandmother is older and she is very disapproving of her son who is Bruno's father. She dosesn't like to see him dressed in his uniform. She loves to put on plays for family gatherings or holidays. One important part in the book is when she finds out that father is commandant and she sees him in his uniform which makes her mad.
"That's all you soldiers are interested in anyway looking handsome in your fine uniforms. Dressing up and doing the terrible, terrible things you do.
Grandmother is disapproving of what her son does and she is very dramatic.
"Despite the chaos that followed, Bruno found that he was still holding Shmuel’s hand in his own and nothing in the world would have persuaded him to let go.”
Schmuel is one of the most important characters in the story besides Bruno. Schmuel is 9 years old and he shares the same birthday as Bruno. The most important thing Schmuel does in the book is he lets Bruno come under the fence and they end up in the gas chamber.
Schmuel is lonely and he is sad that he is in the concentration camp.
Lutinent Kotler is a man most of the character was scared of. He was mean to Bruno and Schmuel was scared of him. One of the most important parts of the book with Kotler was when he got mad at Pavel for spilling stuff all over him. Kotler is a very timid man, and he also was sent away from the camp because he did something with mother.
Kotler has blonde hair and he wears a uniform similar to fathers.
"Who told you that you were allowed to talk in this house? do you dare to disobey me?"
