Bruno is a young boy of nine years who is particularly short for his age. He is very privileged because his dad was a commandant. He had three best friends for life Karl, Martin, and Daniel. Bruno change throughout the course of the book his mind set does change for example the house isn't as bad because of his friend Shmuel and the house wasn't too small because it was only three floors anymore.

Gretel is a 13 year old girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. She has three best friends whom she misses very much. In the beginning of the book she is very childish and still likes to play with her dolls. Towards the end of the book she is taking more of a liking to what's happening in the outside world and politics.

Shmuel is a young Jewish boy from Poland. He lived in an apartment above his father's watch shop before they were moved to Auschwitz. Consequently he happens to have some similarities with a young German boy, Bruno, and becomes friends with this boy who is not so well educated on what is happening in the world. Shmuel comes to show that he is somewhat smarter than Bruno he know three languages.
