They may have chosen to support the British because they had promised them that when the war ended they would protect their territory. They may have chosen to support the Americans because they both had a mutual alliance with the french.

  •  Africans during the war either fought in the battle, became spies, or cooked and helped assist wounded soldiers. They were told by both Loyalists and Patriots that after the war, they would be freed.  It was the case for some Africans, but for others, they were either enslaved again or they escaped.

  • Spying and secret letters were crucial during the American revolution. Coded and masked letters, invisible ink, and ciphers and codes were ways that were used to send signals and plans on what to do. One spy, James Armistead Lafayette, had posed as an escaped slave to trick the British into thinking their army was much more powerful than it really was.
  • The basic weapons used during the revolution were the musket, the pistol, the bayonet, the cannon, and the sword and tomahawk. Usually on ships, they would fire cannons at each other until one ship fell apart. But on land, the stood in tight formation, firing at a steady rate. They also used sneak attacks in which a smaller force attacks a larger force.
