  • When she was at Harvard and looked at the famous alumni, she was determined to be one of them.
  • Once her mother saw the termites she "pulled off [Esmeralda's] clothes and threw them on the ground. The soap in the washtub burned [her] skin, and [Ramona] scrubbed [her] so hard her fingernails dug angry furrows into [her] arms and legs" (10). She then comforted her, but then became stern again, "You see, what happens when you don't do as I say"(10)
