So how much of this food never gets to market?
40% of food will end up in a land fill and never gets eaten
So why is most of this produce never going to market
It isn't going to the market because the produce we don't use isn't "good" to the public eye. And even though it taste fine it doesn't look right , so we don't sell it.
Another reason is size, this apple is too big so it won't make it to market. Every apple has to meet the specific size requirement.
So what is another reason why some produce doesn't get sold ?
So what happens to the produce that isn't packed for the market?
It is plowed over.
It is said that 3 out of 25 broccoli and cauliflower planters donate their unmarketable produce ,so why don't all planters donate their unmarketable produce?
Well it cost more money to get the unmarketable produce to the food banks ,so it is just easier for planters to dump it out or plow over the produce.
Why is it so bad that our crops are ending up in landfills?
Well when the crops rot they create methane which is a very potent greenhouse gas.
