During the McCarthyism Era, people who were not blacklisted ignored the situation to avoid being dragged into the mess. Elia Kazan remained under the radar until he was accused, at which point he accused others ("About Elia Kazan"). Similarly, during the witch trials, many people, including the Proctors, turned a blind eye to the trials. Then, when Elizabeth was accused, John finally spoke out against witchcraft (Miller, The Crucible 23).
Rebecca! You are a witch!
Witchcraft isn't even real...that stinks for Rebecca. Thank goodness it isn't me.
