  • During the Red Scare, Arthur Miller was accused of being a communist and questioned by HUAC due to meetings that he attended that may have had communist ties (Glass).  In The Crucible Tituba was accused of being a witch due to the fact that she was singing Barbados songs and conjuring spirits in the woods (Miller 45).
  • Plot
  • Arthur Miller is being questioned in court about his communist ties. 
  • Titbuba and the girls are in the woods singing Barbados songs. 
  • Arthur Miller refused to name the names of other potential communists that attended the meeting, because of this he was put in jail and convicted of contempt of Congress (Arthur Miller). In the Crucible Giles Corey refused to name the name of the man who gave him his information about Putnam forcing his daughter to accuse George Jacobs of witchcraft which led to Corey being jailed and convicted of contempt of court (Miller 97).

  • Arthur Miller was jailed for contempt of court because he would not name names.
  • Giles Corey was jailed due to comtempt of court for refusing to name names.
