Adams continues on his way to the east coast, but sees the same hitchhiker that he saw on the bridge over and over again. He asked a mechanic that was filling up his car id hitchhikers were a normal occurrence, which they weren't. He also stopped by a shop to ask if they had any coffee, in case he was imagining it due to sleep deprecation. The store owner nearly called the cops because Adams woke him up in the middle of the night for coffee.
Ronald picks up a hitchhiking girl, on the side of the road, because he can't stand to be in the car alone any longer. Almost immediately, he almost crashed, while trying to trying to run down the hitchhiker, who the girl didn't see. A little while later, he crashed into a barbed wire fence, again, while trying to chase down the hitchhiker. The girl no longer wanted to be in the car with him and fought him to get out.
