  • My name is Charles H. Turner.I was born on February 3,1867 in Cincinnati, Ohio. My dad is Thomas Turner who was a church custodian. My mother is Addie Campbell who was a practical nurse. I got into reading and searching at a young age.
  • I love to read!
  • I graduated from Grains High School in 1886. I was the class valedictorian. That same year I enrolled at the University of Cincinnati. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in biology in 1893. The following year I earned my master's degree.
  • Thanks to everyone who helpe dme in this journey.
  • In the year 1887, I married Leontine Troy. We had two kids who were named Henry and Darwin. Sadly my wife passed away in 1895.
  • We're in love!
  • I was the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. in zoology by the University of Chicago. My most notable discovery was that insects can hear and alter their behaviors based on past experiences.

  • During my career I published over 70 research papers. I pioneered in research techniques that helped study the behavior of animals. I also helped in understanding the nature around us. I conducted these experiments in Sumner without a research assistant or much lab space.

  • In 1922, I moved to Chicago, Illinois. I lived with my son Darwin. I passed away the year after, on February 14, 1923. My legacy lives on. Many schools in St. Louis, Missouri have been named after me. There was even books written after me.
