Ronald Adams is leaving on a trip across the country from Brooklyn to California. When he leaves he says bye to his mom because they have a close relationship, they even live together. When he leaves she starts crying and gets worried about him, but he assures her that he is all right.
Adams drives for a bit and makes his way to the Brooklyn Bridge. He sees a hitchhiker on the side of the road that walks toward him on the road. Adams has to swerve to try to not get in a wreck.
It's all taken place since the death of her oldest son Ronald.
Adams thinks nothing of the man until he keeps seeing him again. After seeing him a couple more times he decided to run him over. But he gets stuck on some train tracks and he barely makes it out alive.
Adams sees the hitchhiker many times again and decides to pick up a girl, so he's not by himself. He crashes into a barbed wire fence when he sees the hitchhiker again, and the girl runs out of the car. The girl leaves because she didn't see the hitchhiker, and thinks Adams is crazy. After that Adams starts to see the hitchhiker every other mile.
Adams pulls over to call his mom hoping that if he talks to her he will calm down. He calls her and she doesn't answer someone else does and says she's in the hospital. He asks why and she says because she had a nervous breakdown from her oldest son Ronald dying.
Adams is actually dead because he died from getting in a car accident on the Brooklyn Bridge. Also, we figure out that the hitchhiker was actually a form of death, that's why no one saw him. In the end he sits down and waits for the hitchhiker to come get him.
