Ronald Adams is leaving his home in New York to go to Hollywood. Before he leaves, his mother warns him to be careful and to not pick up any strangers. Mrs. Adams starts crying because he does not want her son to go.
Adams started towards the west coast after he said his goodbyes to his beloved mother. As Adams crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, a hitchhiker stepped off the sidewalk in front of him. Adams had to swerve out of the way so that he didn't hit him.
As Adams keeps driving, he reaches the Pennsylvania Turnpike. At the turnpike, he sees the same hitchhiker that he saw on the bridge. Adams becomes a little weirded out, but keeps on driving
As Adams keeps going, he picks up a girl. As this happens, he keeps sees the hitchhiker so he asked the girl if she sees him, and she says no. By then Adams is totally freaked out and he thinks is going crazy. Adams attempted to kill the hitchhiker by "hitting" the hitchhiker and running into a barbed wire fence. By then the girl is totally freaked out and she gets out of the car and runs away.
Adams started to see the hitchhiker every mile. Therefore, he was so frightened that he had to stop so he could call his mother. He thought that if he heard his mother's voice then it might calm him down, but the call only made things worse.
The lady on the phone informed Adams that Mrs. Adams was rushed to the hospital after having a nervous breakdown because her son, Ronald Adams, died in a car crash. Mrs. Adams had been in the hospital for five days at that point, and she was heartbroken. The phone call then ended and left Adams wondering who he really was.
