Ronald Adams is saying good bye to his mother. They have a very close relationship and his mother is worried for him. She does not like that he is driving there and is talking to him like he was still seventeen.
Adams is driving to California when he sees a hitchhiker walking across the Brooklyn bridge and would have hit him if he wouldn't have swerved. He continues to drive but is paranoid because the hitchhiker seemed a little weird to Adams. The hitchhiker has a cap pulled down over his eyes, fresh patches of rain on his shoulders, and was holding a sleeping bag.
Ronald Adams is driving when he sees the hitchhiker once again on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He eventually stops at a gas station and asks the worker if he ever sees any hitchhikers on the highway. The worker goes on to say no a hitchhiker would be crazy to be here since it is a straight shot with pretty much no speed limit.
Ronald Adams pick up a girl hitchhiker so that when he drives he doesn't have to be alone since he is still freaked out about the hitchhiker. As he is driving he sees him once again and swerves to try and hit him but misses and runs into a barbed wire fence. The girl is now scared of Adams and gets out of the car.
Adams stops at an auto body shop and goes to a phone booth to call his mom. When someone answers it wasn't his mom so he asked what had happened to her. The woman that answered the phone said she was in the hospital because of a panic attack. She goes on to say that she had that because of her son dying in a car accident.
Adams is in disbelief because he is told that he died in a car accident on the Brooklyn Bridge. He didn't even know he was dead so he went to go see his mom in the hospital. He was extremely sad and could't believe that anything was real.
