Theme Parallel The theme of paranoia dominating logic and reasoning is paralleled between McCarthyism and The Crucible, since the Red Scare involved a rampant search for communists due to the fear that they were secretly infiltrating the American Government. Analogous to the irrational fear of invasive communists is that in The Crucible, Danforth acts similarly to the HUAC in demanding names and information from the accused, else they are jailed.
The HUAC implemented a "paranoid hunt for infiltrators", which especially targeted actors and writers of entertainment, many of which without authentic evidence. (Elia Kazan)
McCarthyism - HUAC
We will purge this nation of communists! No true American should be afraid of the committee!
In The Crucible, Danforth proclaims to Hale that the country is guilty because they are afraid. According to him, innocent people should not fear the court. (Miller 98)
"Then there is a prodigious guilt in the country. Are you afraid to be questioned here?" (Miller 98)
