The creation of nuclear bombs started the arms race between the United states and the Soviet Union. It was a competition for supremacy of nuclear warfare. Both the U.S. and the Soviet Union developed an intercontinental ballistic missile, or an ICBM, which was capable of reaching anywhere in each other's territory. The threat of nuclear destruction frightened people and bomb shelters were made.
The Berlin Airlift
The Marshall Plan's purpose was to aid Western Europe. The U.S. gave over $13 billion in economic assistance after the end of World War II. Not only was Financial aid given, but also food, fuel, and machinery.
The hysteria over the perceived threat posed by Communists inside the U.S. was known as the Red Scare. The spread of communism in CHina and East Europe had people on edge. A senator named Joe McCarthy wanted to out communists in the government.
The Berlin Wall
After WWII Germany was divided into four zones controlled by France, the U.S, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain. The Soviet Union wanted to control Berlin, they blocked the train tracks and roads. The U.S. and Great Britan dropped supplies into Berlin by airplane.
Sputnik was the world's first artificial satellite and was launched by Russia. It's launch marked the beginning of the space age and space race. New political, military, technological and scientific developments were made. The space race started in 1957 and lasted until 1975.
The Berlin Wall primarily served as something to keep people in their place. It seperated communists in the East from capitalist West. The wall was a huge barrier made out of barbed wire and concrete.
