Heck Tate and Company bombard the Finch’s home one morning. The mob comes to complain about Tom Robinson's placement in the local jail. Jem and Scout watch from the living room window.
Late one night, Atticus is sitting by the local jail reading a newspaper when a mob appears. This mob wants to take law into their own hands and take Tom Robinson. LIttle does Atticus know, Scout, Dill, and Jem followed him downtown to look for him.
Scout, Jem, and Dill push through the crowd to get to Atticus. After multiple times of Atticus begging Jem to take Scout and Dill, Scout tries to make adult conversation with Mr. Cunningham. Within that conversation, Scout mentions his son, Walter, who is in her class, and his entailment. While Scout is speaking, the mob gets awful quiet.
The mob gets in their cars and drives away. Atticus assures Tom from the jail that they’re gone and Mr. Underwood calls from the window with his shotgun The kids are sent home. Atticus grabs his light bulb and newspaper and heads home.
