Ronald Adams leaves his home in Brooklyn, NY for Hollywood, CA on a rainy day. He bids farewell to his distressed mother and promises to be careful. Adams leaves, in excellent spirits.
As Adams crosses the Brooklyn Bridge, he sees a man leaning against the cables. The man appears to be waiting for a ride. The man stepped off the sidewalk and Adams has to swerve to miss him.
At the Pennsylvania Turnpike, as Ronald slows down for one of the tunnels, he sees the hitchhiker again. He keeps going and decides to get gas. While filling up, he discovers that hitchhikers never appear around that area.
After seeing the hitchhiker multiple times, Ronald decides that he's not going to drive alone anymore. He picks up a girl who is hitchhiking. While driving, Adams sees the hitchhiker again and crashes into a barbed wire fence. The says Adams is crazy and runs away.
Adams begins to see the hitchhiker everywhere. He stops in Albuquerque to call his mother. A different woman answers and he discovers that his mother had been taken to the hospital for a nervous breakdown that happened after he died.
Ronald finds out that he crashed his car at the Brooklyn Bridge when he swerved to miss the hitchhiker. His mother had been inconsolable after he died. She was rushed to the hospital after a nervous breakdown.
