Ronald Adams is leaving his mother to go Pennsylvania. His mother will miss him but he tells her it will only be three months. They say their goodbyes and he leaves for the road trip.
Adams crosses the Brooklyn Bridge when he sees a man on the road. He swerves to not hit it. Adams ends up in an accident.
Adams continues down the road after the accident. He sees the same man again. He gets worried and wonders why this man keeps following him.
Adams picks up a girl along the way. When Adams sees the hitchhiker again, he tries hitting him but runs into a fence. The girl believes he is crazy and immediately leaves his car.
Adams uses a telephone to call his mom, when a strange voice comes on. It is the voice of Mrs. Whitley, not his mother. She tells him that Adams' mom is in a mental breakdown after losing her son, Ronald.
Ronald Adams died on the accident on Brooklyn Bridge. The reader believes his journey was him as a ghost. Adams is still suspicious and confused about the hitchhiker and his death.
