After making it to New York, Holden gets a cab to a hotel he will be staying at. During his ride in the taxi he begins asking the driver what happens to baby ducks during the winter. This is significant because he ducks symbolize adolescents instinctively entering adulthood, which is a pressing issue that worries Holden
Holden tries to be a better person and be a more "mature" person so he basically forces these two nuns he sees to take his donation. This is one of the first selfless act Holden preforms in the book
Holden takes his sister to the carnival and tells her to ride the carousel, this represents childhood innocence. It makes him happy. Pheobe gives him his red hunting hat back and it brings Holden nearly to tears
