Storyboard Text

  • Arthur Miller connects to John Proctor because both are closely connected to something without actually being involved. They both strongly oppose something that ends up involving them more further down the line.
  • "Arthur Miller had great distaste for McCarthy’s investigations in the early 1950s" (Lindsay). He was fascinated by socialist and communist ideas, but did not wish to be involved in the conflict surrounding it.
  • Communism is okay I guess, but I'm not getting too involved...
  • John Proctor has a strong dislike for the witch trials and know they are unnecessary. He knows he is religious, but doesn't think he needs to attend church in order to prove it (Miller).
  • Do I really need to attend church to be religious?
  • Stupid Salem Witch Trials!
  • Histeria was a common theme in both subjects. Histeria caused the conviction of innocent people and cause many to completely lose their reputations. People began to fear one another because they were afraid they would be accused.
  • During the Red Scare, there was a constant fear of being accused of being a communist. The fear of Russian spies in America led to people making poor judgement decisions and convicting innocents ("Red").
  • But I'm not a communist, I swear!
  • People during the witch trials lived in constant fear of being accused of witchcraft because the only way to live was to confess. Many innocent people, such as local saint Rebecca Nurse were killed for not confessing (Miller, Crucible 71).
  • I am no witch I am God's woman!
