  • In 1957, Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite was launched. This marked the creation of NASA.
  • The Red Scare
  • I'm not even a communist! Where are you getting this information?
  • On August 29, 1949, the Soviet Union tested their first atomic bomb. This sent the rest of the world into a panic regarding the threat of nuclear war. People began to build underground bomb shelters out of fear.
  • The Berlin Wall
  • After the Soviet Union halted traffic and cut off electricity to the city of Berlin in an attempt to gain power over the city, the people were left without supplies. The U.S. and Great Britain flew over and dropped supplies for them.
  • The Korean War
  • Joe McCarthy, a senator, accused people of being communists, although he had little information. This "witch hunt" and the extreme anti-communism sent the country into a second red scare.

  • The Berlin Wall was a makeshift barbed wire and concrete block wall built to keep the Western "Fascists" from entering Eastern Germany and undermining the socialist state.
