The author creates this scene to give us an intro into Holden's mind. Here Mr. Spencer is giving Holden advice about staying at Pencey but Holden refuses to let it sink in because he doesn't feel the need to grow up.
In this scene Holden gets in a fight with Stradlater. Holden feels jealous of Stradlater and Jane's relationship.
When in the Taxi, Holden asks the driver where the ducks go in the winter. Holden doesn't know where they go just like how Holden does not know where to go in life. The ducks also mirror Holden's anxiety and state of life.
Holden's date with Sally reveals Holden's dark mind.
Phoebe loves him and sees past his flaws, Phoebe as a child can give him feeling of security, can relate best to her.
Mr. Antolini also gives Holden wise advice. This could also be an example of the author inserting himself in the story. However, in this scene Holden leaves because Holden feels that Mr. Antolini is trying to molest him.
