Adams is going across the country for a trip. Adams' mom doesn't want him to go because she is scared he will get hurt. She wants him to be extra careful by not falling asleep and not picking up any strangers.
It was raining that morning on the Brooklyn bridge. Then he saw a man leaning against the cables and he seemed be waiting for a lift. He had fresh rain on his shoulders.
It was a 265 mile long highway with a high speed limit. he was slowing down for the tunnels when he saw the man again standing under an arc light by the side of the road. He then hailed for him to stop and pick him up but he stepped on the gas to get away as fast as possible.
Adams felt lonely and so he found a girl and asked if she needed a ride to Amarillo, Texas. She said yes and they are driving and he asks if someone could beat him to every own and she says I don't know. Then he sees the guy again and asks the girl if she saw him too and she said no. Then he sees him again and crashes into a barbed wire fence and the girl leaves as Adams is begging her not to go.
Adams is confused so he calls his moms house and a random person answers the phone. He asks where his mom is and the person says in the hospital. Adams asked why and the person said because the recent loss of her son she had a mental breakdown.
The operators of the phone booth told him his 3 minutes were up multiple times. When he got off he was sitting in Gallup, New Mexico. He was trying to think and trying not to go mad and that was the end.
