Storyboard Text

  • Jim and Della live in a very plain flat and never have any visitors. It is Christmastime, and Della only has $1.87 to spend on her wonderful husband's Christmas gift.
  • Della would do anything to get her husband a new chain for his beloved pocket watch. Her most prized possession is her long, flowing brown hair. She decides to sell her hair to get more money to be able to afford the watch chain.
  • Della and Jim are very devoted to each other. All they want is to be able to show their devotion this Christmas by giving each other a nice gift. But neither of them have enough money to buy each other the gifts they want.
  • *In the other room*
  • When Jim comes home from work, he goes into the kitchen to find out that Della cut her hair. She explains that she cut it so that she could afford a gift for Jim. Jim is dumbfounded and doesn't know how to react.
  • They both confess that they both sold their beloved possessions to get the other a gift. Jim bought Della a set of tortoiseshell combs for her hair. Della bought Jim a platinum chain for his pocket watch.
  • Della sold her hair for the chain, and Jim sold his watch for the combs. They both realize that it's the thought that counts when speaking in the context of Christmas gifts. Della's hair will grow back, and Jim will eventually buy his watch back.
