When the printing press was invented, many were afraid that people would lose the ability to retain information due to it all being written down. Books ended up bringing information to millions of people who would otherwise have remained uneducated.
When televison sets made their way into american homes, people thought that they were only distractions that kept children from learning and interacting with others. TV ended up providing a new way for children to learn and for people to see sights that they never could have seen before.
Now, people are afraid that smart phones are making everyone lazier and more self absorbed because of gaming and apps surrounding self image. Smart phones give access to a wealth of information at any location within seconds.
Whenever a game changing invention comes around, people are quick to denounce it out of fear. They are afraid of the drastic changes that they will bring with them. However, books are not evil, TVs are not evil, and phones are not evil. The only thing that determines whether an invention is good or bad is the intent of the wielder. Inventions are not evil, people are.
Nearly any invention can be used for good or evil. The Bible was used to bring billions of people together. Mein Kampf was used to turn a bitter people's anger against an entire group of individuals.
Just as we are the deciders of what is right and wrong, we are the deciders of when to do right and wrong things. It should never be a question of whether or not an invention should be made. It should be a question of who the person is that is using it and why.
