  • To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core." (Poe 315) The Raven symbolizes death which is creepy because no one wants to die. They also don't want to know they are dying from a Raven. Ravens are considered creepy because they are always around death.

  • "Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!" I shrieked, upstarting-" ( Poe 317) The narrator begins to yell at the bird when he gets worked up which causes him to be violent.

  • "And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost up the floor." ( Poe 313) As the narrator describes his surroundings, he says that the flames of the fire look like ghost coming to get him.

  • The narrator resides in a chamber room that is dark and plain. He describes the purple curtains and the shadows from the fire and the darkness. It was in the bleak December;and each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor..... And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain....Darkness there and nothing more."( Poe 313)
  • "From my books surcrease of sorrow- sorrow for the lost Lenore- for the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore- Nameless here for evermore."  (Poe 313) The narrator feels guilt and sadness from the death of Lenore.
  •  "'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door- only this and nothing more." (Poe 312) "So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating, "'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door- Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door;- This it is and nothing more." (Poe 313) The narrator feels that everything is out to get him and he believes he is going insane from hearing things.
