on august 29, 1949 the soviet union successfully tested its first atomic bomb. people started building bomb shelters and underground shelters in case of emergencies.
the red scare was fear of communist. people started taking violent acts towards people even suspected of supporting communism.
The Berlin war
Soviet military divided germany into four parts. Russian,American, French and British zones. The Soviet Union wanted total control, so in 1948 they blocked all rail and road traffic in Berlin. the US then flew supplies over to help them survive and in 1949 the blockade ended.
