  • RISING ACTION
  • CLIMAX
  • Sunitha was born in Bangalore, to Palakkad Malayali parents Raju Krishnan and Nalini Krishnan. Her passion for social work manifested when, at the age of eight years, she started teaching dance to mentally challenged children. By the age of twelve, she was running schools in slums for underprivileged children.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • At the age of fifteen, while working on a neo-literacy campaign for the Dalit community, Krishnan was gang-raped by eight men. They did not like that a woman was interfering with what they claimed as “man’s society.” The men beat her so badly that she became partially deaf in one ear.
  • FALLING ACTION (cont.)
  • PRAJWALA
  • Sunitha survived the attack but her struggle had only just begun. Her parents shamed her. Her community shunned her, blaming Sunitha herself & her family for allowing this to happen. Sunitha was being punished for the crime committed against her, & she was utterly alone with no one to turn to.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Sunitha did not allow society to diminish her inner strength. She saw an immense need for change & an opportunity to bring awareness & support to women who experienced similar trauma. She took this as a motivation & started working against human trafficking, providing help to women. She earned a degree in psychiatric social work & began counseling women in prostitution.
  • She established Prajwala, with a mission to rescue & rehabilitate victims of sex trafficking & help them reintegrate into society. Today, it has evolved into one of the world’s largest civil society organizations crusading against sex trafficking and sex crime saved more than 18,500 women and children.
  • She began working alongside local police & established three separate shelters for victims . Her courage, conviction, determination & her fighting spirit is an inspiration to all. She sees her work as a truly global effort – spanning beyond India’s borders and representing a fight against sex trafficking around the world.
