  • The Articles created a loose confederation of sovereign states and a weak central government, leaving most of the power with the state governments. The articles were created in 1777.
  • People such as George Washington, James Madison, and only 55 delegates could attend. Those who did not attend included Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Samuel Adams and, John Hancock.
  • In 1787, poor farmers from western Massachusetts fighting against high taxes followed Daniel Shays in an attempt to seize the arms stockpiled at the Springfield Armory.
