The journey across the atlantic was hard.When the Immigrants arrived in New York harbor they were very tired,but this did not stop them from cheering and sometimes weep with joy. Soon after doctors would board the ship and begin their medical inspection.
The medical Exam
The immigrants were given Identity tags when they got off the boat.Then they would take their things and take them to the baggage room for inspection,but this was much harder than you would think. Since no spoke the same language it was extremely challenging for the officers to tell the immigrants what to do
The legal Inspection
The registry room Is were the Immigrants would wait for their legal and medical inspections.The officials in the registry room Decide if someone cace needed further inspection or if they could go it the country right away.Sometimes a simple problem could take days or sometimes weeks for it to be resolved.Later the registry room was nick named the great hall for its massive size.
Officials doing the medical exams gave immigrants a test called the "six second physical".These medical exams were used to if they had limps shortness of breath or any other signs illness of contagious diseases.If someone was considered a medical health risk were marked with calk on their clothes if needed further examination.
When a stem boat arrived the crew gave officials a list of names and information.This list was called a manifest.Later in the imigrashon process the manifest would be used to question the Immigrants.An example of some questions are Were are you from? What is your occupation?Have you ever been convicted of a crime?.If their answers did not mach the ones on the manifest they could be detained for more questioning.
detanes for medical reasons were taken to Ellis Island hospital to be cared for.Some were treated for weeks or even months.After some time the Bored of special Inquiry would decide If the immigrant could say in the the U.S of A,or have to go back home.A legal detainee would wait in a dormitory room until there case could be reviewed in the herring room.
