  • When i went to live with the Hughs, I learned how to read a write. In accomplishing this, I was compelled to resort to various stratagems.
  • To continue the story, let me tell you about the adventure i had working for the Hugh’s.
  • Mrs. Hughs was a very kindhearted mistress. She fed the hungry and clothed the naked. She even taught me how to read and write.
  • But her husband told her stop. That is when she because violent. Sometimes even more violent than her husband. She was an apt woman.
  • I found this book once, it was about a master and a slave. The more i read it, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers
  • Whenever is went to go run errands, i brought a book. I wanted to keep my progress and hopefully learn more. I would always bring bread with me and give it to two little hungry urchins
  • I would often find myself doubting my own existence, wishing myself dead; and but the hope for being free, I have no doubt but that i should have killed myself.
  • Very soon after my return to Baltimore, my mistress Lucretia, died, leaving her husband and one child;Amanda, and in Avery short time after her death, Master Andrew died.
  • In a very short time after i went to live at Baltimore; my old masters youngest son Richard died.
  • And Basically after that I talked about my grandma and a poem that relates to her. Then master married another woman. And off i sailed from Baltimore to St. Michael’s. And when it came, i was determined to be off.
