Salaams! My name is Zarina Patel, and I'm from Gujarat, India. These are my siblings.
Unfortunately, when I was in grade 6, I had to drop out of school to take care of my brothers and sisters. Although I couldn't learn anymore, I loved seeing them all the time
Moving forward, in 1973 after I got married, I moved to Queens, New York. I spoke no english, and knew nobody except my husband.
After I moved, I had a son one year later. I was a stay at home mother. My favorite thing to do was to cook a big lunch, and then pack it to have a picnic in the park. I still couldn't speak English, so it was just me and my kids
Learning English is extremely hard. When I had my first son, we hired a caretaker, and she used to watch general hospital when he was napping. Because of this, I watched the show, and the drama (and sesame street) are what led me to learning the language.
To support myself and my family, and keep myself busy while my kids were at school, I got a job working at McDonald's.
