Storyboard Text

  • You are prepared ...
  • Yes.
  • "He thought of Katharine, his wife. Winston was married---had been married... Consorting with prostitutes was forbidden, of course, but it was one of those rules that you could occasionally nerve yourself to break. It was dangerous, but it was not a life-and-death matter (64)". Winston married, was allured by the scent of the prostitute. Although Winston chose to take a risk with a prostitute like heroes takes risks, he chooses to do it in a negative way. Winston's character of an anti-hero is brought out when he chooses to be disloyal toward his wife.
  • "He, Winston Smith, knew that Oceania had been in alliance with Eurasia as short a time as four years ago. But where did that knowledge exist?...And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed – if all records told the same tale – then the lie passed into history and became truth" (34). Winston is aware that Oceania was once in alliance with Eurasia, yet is also convinced that the lie from the party that Oceania was never in alliance with Eurasia could become the truth (an example of doublethink).` Although Winston had knowledge about the truth, he is being manipulated by the party.  Winston isn't being wise about the party and is showing a lack of awareness which brings out Winston's character of an anti-hero.
  • "'You are prepared to cheat, to forge, to blackmail, to corrupt the minds of children, to distribute habit-forming drugs, to encourage prostitution, to disseminate venereal diseases - to do anything which is likely to cause demoralization and weaken the power of the Party' 'Yes.'" (172). Winston was always able to come up with an excuse for himself, no matter the situation. Winston believed that bad things do not matter if it is for something good, which shows how he is an antihero, doing bad things in the first place.
