A stable food supply was needed in a civilization. People in Sumer used an irrigation system to maintain it. There were many canals and reservoirs included in this system. One thing that they invented was the plow. It was easier to use the plow than to dig rows for crops by hand, it was more accurate, and faster

The social structure in Sumer was like a triangle, kings, priests and scribes (people who wrote down big events that happened) were on top, merchants and artisans were in the middle and slaves were at the bottom
Religion was VERY important
Sumerians built temples and statues to worship the gods. they thought that the gods and goddess' lived in these temples called ziggurats.
Metal workers made tools, weapons and decorative items. They used drums pipes and lyres for music
Before the wheel was invented, Sumerians used flat bottomed carts with no wheels called sledges to transfer goods. But they discovered how to make a wheel by clamping together pieces of wood.
Sumerians wrote in a language called cuneiform. at one point, it contained about 2,000 symbols, then got narrowed down to 700! Scribes drew symbols called pictographs into wet clay. (pictographs are like hieroglyphics, a symbol meaning a word) When the clay was dry, it was permanently engraved
