The theme that fit best for this story is "Suspicion Can Destroy". I feel as though this theme fits is because the characters in the story suspect the other characters and it all leads to disaster. First, the residents of Maple Street question Les Goodman because his car started up when no one else's did. This led to more questioning when a woman said that she had seen him staring at the stars as if he were waiting for something. Later in the story, Charlie grabs a shotgun out of Steve's hand and shoots Pete Van Horn. Charlie shot Pete because he had stepped out from the shadows and he thought that Pete was an alien. At the end of the story, the residents of Maple Street begin to turn on one another while thinking that everyone is an alien. Therefore, everyone starts running, screaming, throwing rocks, and showing high amounts of aggression. In conclusion, suspicion can lead to destruction that can break bonds, belongings, and trust.
The people accuse Les Goodman of working for the aliens because he has been seen staring at the sky
