  • Strong patriotism
  • Foreign aid from France
  • Strong Commanders
  • The Colonists were fighting for their freedom and their rights. They viewed the war as something they could not lose at all costs.
  • Outnumbered
  • Since France had hated the British, they were eager to help out in the war. Lafayette gathered support of the war and helped the colonists immensely with their shortage of supplies.
  • Untrained
  • George Washington was extremely skilled and had a ton of experience in fighting wars. He had a good understanding of how to command an army and how the British commanded theirs.
  • Shortages of supplies and food
  • The Continental Army was always short of capable and qualified soldiers. The soldiers also still had to tend to their farms and go home, which prevented consistency in the army.
  • Not enough Americans were trained to be in battle, many were just normal volunteers. They were not experienced enough, so a wall of Britsh soldiers would make the colonists run.
  • There were so many shortages that Benjamin Franklin suggested using weapons such as bows and knives to fight. They also had food and clothes shortages, harming them in winter.
