  • She dressed plainly because she could not afford fine clothes, but she was as unhappy as a woman who has come down in the world; for women have no family rank or social class.

  • Verbal Irony: Hubby got a letter from the Minister of Education at the invite of the ball. But Mathilde is just there sad because, the people that are there are upper class, and Mathilde wants some expensive to shows that she isn't poor. Mathilde wants to show everyone she's a upper.

  • Mathilde went with an old friend Mme. Forestier to barrow her jewelry for the party she is going. She was looking, looking unitl she found the right jewerly she want to wear.  
  • She's happy that Mme. Forestier let her borrow the necklace. The day of the party that Mathilde will show off her necklace. Make other people jealous by her necklace. 
  • Dramatic Irony: She was the pretties one there, fashionable, gracious, smiling, and wild with joy. All the men turned to look at her, asked who she was, begged to be introduced. All the cabinet officials wanted to waltz with her.
