There is a homeless man on the side of the street. He is standing near a small pile with a bag of chips, a water bottle, and some trash. His name is Jim.
I'm so hungry...
As Jim is standing on the sidewalk, a woman named Libby drives by in her red car.
In her car, she happens to notice Jim and she feels bad that she has nothing to give to him.
I wish I had something to give to that homeless man...
Jim is 22 years old and has recently become homeless because his house caught on fire and he could not afford to by an other one. When his house caught on fire he was single and his parents both died when he was 20 so he did not have anyone to live with.
That night, Libby tells her husband about what she saw. She also tells him about how it makes her sadder than usual.
Libby and her husband, Jerry, have been married for three years. they both have very successful jobs and make a lot of money. They have never had to worry about food insecurity, shelter, water, etc.
The next morning, she sets some stuff in her car. She has put together some food, some water, and some of her husbands old clothes to give to Jim.
In the past few years, Libby has noticed more and more homeless people in her town. She knows that she should do something about it, but she never does. For some reason, seeing Jim makes her sadder than usual.
As she drives off, she notices that he immediately sits down and starts eating an apple.
This apple tastes so good!
She decides that she will put together a basket of stuff to give to Jim the next day on her way to work.
I saw a homeless man. I felt bad that I couldn't give him anything.
You should give him something tomorrow.
When she drops off the food, she notices how happy Jim is. He thanks her many times before she leaves.
Within the next year she has started a company that provides food to the homeless. It is very successful, and she has given many speeches about how people can help the homeless. She realizes how hard it can be to not have certain privileges, and she is thankful that she is so fortunate..
