“A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner...No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him. No wind that blew was bitterer then he”. (pg. 621)
“I mean to give him the same chance every year, wheather he likes it or not, for I pity him. He may rail at Christmas but… I think I shook him yesterday.” (pg. 652)
“Its likely to be a very cheap funeral...for, upon my life, I dont know anybody to go to it… read upon the stone of the neglected grave his own name, EBENEZER SCROOGE” (pg. 663)
As he is described, Scrooge is a cold hearted wrenching old sinner. This shows just how hated Scrooge is as a person. He was bitter and stave one, says how his heart was so cold that it “didnt thaw it one degree at christmas”, this shows how even at the cheeriest time of the year, Scrooge is as cold as ever.
“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The spirits of all Three shall strive within me… Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone!” (pg.663)
This quote is describing Scrooge’s nephew who he fought with the day before. Scrooge’s nephew has a selfless positvie personality that he uses to believe in his uncle (scrooge). Although Scrooge is mean to him he believes in him which is a huge part in Scrooge trying to change
I don’t know anything. I’m quite a baby. Never mind. I don’t care. I’d rather be a baby....he had never dreamed that any walk--that anything--could give him so much happiness." 667
When the third spirit visits scrooge, the future spirit. He shows scrooge a dead man who is neglected. Nobody wants to go to his funeral and everyone is dancing and happy that he is dead, the spirit then points to a gravestone in which scrooge’s name is on. At this moment the theme is developed because scrooge is changing and wants to change
Theme-people can change with the right guidence and with people believing in you.
Without the help from the three spirits, and knowing that his nephew was never going to give up on making Scrooge a better person, helped Scrooge have enough help in order to completely alter the future, and what path he was going on. Not only did he learn from the spirits but he also used the things he learned and had an effect others. Scrooge made up with his family and changed the life for others including his clerk and by saving Tiny Tim.
This is the turning point where the theme becomes obvious. Theme is described here because Scrooge is finally attempting to change. He is realizing how nobody cares that he is dead and that the only emotion about his death is happiness. Scrooge gets scared that this will be his life and no good will come from him.
This is showing that scrooge really did change. With the guidence from all of the spirits, and the eyeopening expiriences that scrooge had made scrooge change completely. He says he is a baby because he thinks of this as starting his life over and being rebirthed so he can change. He is happy and joyful and is making up with his nephew, which shows complete change.
