  • Jamestown's economy was heavily based on tobacco. Exporting the cash crop to the old world is what made them their money.
  • Jamestown was a marshy-swamp area. the soil was fertile but they had a problem with high tide and brackish water.
  • Jamestown was going to be governed by King James I, but he was too far away. John Smith took charge and said, if you do not work, you do not eat. They later created the House of Burgesses.
  • There were many social groups in Jamestown, ranging from indentured servants(debtors) to gentlemen. 19 slaves were eventually brought from Africa
  • The difference between Jamestown and Plymouth is that Jamestown had different settlers, economic strategies, reasons for settlements, and a very different geographic area
