Jamestown's economy was heavily based on tobacco. Exporting the cash crop to the old world is what made them their money.
Jamestown was a marshy-swamp area. the soil was fertile but they had a problem with high tide and brackish water.

There were many social groups in Jamestown, ranging from indentured servants(debtors) to gentlemen. 19 slaves were eventually brought from Africa
